Teixidó will review the best of his work in a show that follows in the footsteps of those staged previously by Mario Ruiz, Ramón Esteve and Vicent Martínez.
An exhibition of the work of Spanish master of design Miguel Milá will be landing at Hábitat, staged by Santa & Cole, whilst Valencian designer José Manuel Ferrero will be going back to his roots at NUDE, marking 20 years of the show with a concept exhibition.
Valencia, 30th May 2023.- With more than 90% of the exhibition space at the upcoming edition already booked, Feria Hábitat València has started to configure its programme of activities, events and exhibits that will be taking place during the fair.
The fair, which runs from 19th to 22nd next September at Feria Valencia, will be organising an exhibition about the career of Catalan designer Gabriel Teixidó, one of Spain’s foremost names in contemporary interiors. The show will be one of the major pieces of content at Feria Hábitat València 2023, and follows in the footsteps of other major shows staged by the fair such as those about Patricia Urquiola and Héctor Ruiz (2010), Jaime Hayón (2012), and more recently Mario Ruiz (2018), Ramón Esteve (2019) and Vicent Martínez (2022).
Visitors to Hábitat 2023 will also have the opportunity to see two further exhibitions about eminent figures in the world of design. One, curated by Santa & Cole, will feature the best of Miguel Milá, including items by the designer from the Trenat and Mobles 114 collections. The Miguel Milá ehibition will not seek to be a typical retrospective but will instead attempt to provide a fresh, different insight into who Miguel Milá is, covering more than just a timeline and showing the Catalan designer’s typical accessibility and warmth.
Hábitat 2023 will also be staging a display of the most outstanding work by Ontinyent based designer José Manuel Ferrero, creativedirector at estudi{H}ac.
This exhibit will, according to the Habitat’s director Daniel Marco, consolidate “our commitment to recognising and promoting Spanish design through its leading exponents, with the best companies of the moment exhibiting and also by recognising the work, careers and talent of the designers themselves”.
Gabriel Teixidó, the methodical designer
Gabriel Teixidó was born in 1947 en Barcelona. Having trained at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos de Barcelona, he set up as a freelance in 1970 and has worked on new projects one after the other ever since. He turned his ideas into commercial successes, which he attributes to his solid artistic base.
The method he applies to designing more than just ostentatious shapes has earned him several SIDI and Delta prizes. One of the main areas of his work is office furniture: technologically sophisticated pieces that he designs for a large number of companies.
He defines himself as a “fairly” industrial designer, oblivious to fashions. His way of working, alone, yields pared-back designs in shapes that are far from ostentatious. This discretion and efficacy have made him an eternal survivor within the Spanish design landscape. Teixidó has a special ability to turn his designs into commercial successes: “what I am interested in is that my designs are useful, that people feel comfortable with them, that they are a help”. As a designer he works closely with the companies that commission him and aspires for his designs to be profitable for them.
The list of companies he has worked with is extensive and includes Andreu World, Kendo Mobiliario, Enea, Oken, Joker, Grassoler, Santa & Cole, Disform, Grupo T, Interi, Aridi, Biok, Point, Levesta and Permasa,to name but a few.
Miguel Milá, master of Spanish design
Miguel Milá represents Spanish design like no-one else. A member of the generation of 1950s design pioneers, he has seen some of his pieces of furniture and lamps become genuine classics. Santa & Cole has been manufacturing his products since the company’s inception and sells them today in more than 80 countries. His products feature in the catalogues of companies such as Trenat and Mobles 114, also included in the display. His work has been based on bringing tradition up to date, eschewing fashions and conventions, focusing on the development process and on ageing his pieces as a way of adding value, with aesthetics and beauty a consequence of the pursuit of functionality and excitement.
The objects he creates are accessible. Milá’s objects do not fulfil or create new uses but, rather, make existing uses easier and more convenient. They help improve the user’s experience without creating new needs. His objects are an expression of the triumph of ingeniousness over engineering, meaning that certain components of his objects fulfil several functions and cater for several needs. Thus the TM lamp family’s cable is also its own switch.
José Manuel Ferrero, atelier-made design.
The youngest of the three designers, for his part, José Manuel Ferrero, has over the last few decades made a niche for himself within Spain’s design landscape. Born in Ontinyent (Valencia) in 1978, he founded estudi{H}ac in 2003, turning his design ‘atelier’ into a point of reference for Spanish and international design.
It could be said that the British term ‘Bespoke’ is the dogma that informs every design by the Valencian industrial designer, as he creates ítems and elements that are unique to every project. Estudi{H}ac is conceived as a design atelier, specialising in creative concepts for projects. Every one is tailored specifically for the client in question to create unique, timeless spaces or products that deliver a stunning initial visual impact and have an amazing story behind them.
He works with well-known companies such as: Puricelli, Porcelanosa Grupo, Ondarreta, Vondom, Sancal, LZF, Toulemonde Bochart, Point, Estiluz, Harmony, Vical Design, Aromas del Campo, Vigar and Colección Alexandra. His work has as a result received recognition in the form of prestigious Spanish and international prizes including the German Design Awards, Restaurant & Bar Design Awards and an award from New York’s ICFF. One of his latest creations was the ‘Tailor Hotel’ installation at the most recent edition of FIMMA + Maderalia at Feria Valencia itself.
Feria Hábitat Valencia is the foremost international showcase for the Spaish interiors industry, featuring a vast range of furniture, lighting, decorative ítems, upholstery and sleep and bedding. It brings together more than 600 Spanish and international companies every year, whilst the latest edition received more than 48,000 trade visitors from 70 countries. In 2023, the fair takes place alongside Home Textiles Premium by Textilhogar.
